Anyone here from/been to Crawley?

I'm a big Cure fan as you can see from my avatar and they are from Crawley. Does anyone here know anything about Crawley and it's landmarks? I'm particularly interested in a pub called The Rocket which is where they played their first gig and the bandstand in the town centre. Does anyone know how far these things are from the train station?

the bandstand in Queens Square is easily within walking distance of the Station but i suspect it was the bandstand in Tilgate Park they would have played a concert which is less than 1 mile from the station sorry i dont know the Rocket P H

  • Here you go - Google is your friend.....

    "The Railway (nee The Rocket)<
why did they ever change the name?? This is where The Cure started. Crawley has got no scene what so ever. Boring. Has a couple of good bands."

Not been to Crawley since 1976 myself, when I was 5 lol

edit: take it with a pinch of salt though because further in my search I uncovered "The Firkin (formorly the Rocket) is head banging but nice atmos."

edit again: "In August 1866 Mark and Nelly were presented with a silver tea service inscribed "To Mark Lemon, Esq. as a token of affectionate regard." It was presented at a dinner held in their honour at the Station Inn. I suspect that this became the Railway Hotel, which then became the Rocket, with the sign of Stevenson’s Rocket. For a brief spell it became the ‘Firkin and Firecracker’ with the sign of a firework. Sometimes one wonders who had the brain cell the day that name was derived! - Update - it has been redecorated and is now known as “The Railway” - Nearly full circle!"

The Rocket is now The Railway - see here

For more useless trivia ... if you're a Bowie fan, then the Rat and Parrot pub in Beckenham is where David Bowie (Jones) held the 'Beckenham Arts Lab' when the pub used to be known as The Three Tuns.
