b.t.w. You don't say where in the country you are. If you are within an hour drive of the M3/A303 junction near Basingstoke, Hampshire, then I would strongly recommend giving Micheldever Tyres a ring. Their price for 4 tyres on my wife' Forester absolutely stunned me - £86/tyre compared with the cheapest online or local outlet of around £115 for the exact same tyre. The distance driven to get there is far outweighed by the cost saving IMHO.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions, has anyone used www.easityre.co.uk?
They are offering michelins inc vat at the following prices:
    Energy E3A 205/60 R16 H rated £64.13 each
    Energy E3A 205/66 R16 V rated £69.09 each
    Pilot Primacy 205/60 R16 V rated £69.09 each
    Pilot HX MXM 205/60 R16 V rated £69.09 each

Looks like they are mainly trade but claim to also supply retail. Would have to find a fitter but looks like a good deal. Anyone got any opinions as to the best tyres of these.

Well I went to CostCo, Haydock this evening and picked up 4 x Michelin Pilot Sport 2's 225/40/R18 for £423.16 an excellent price, and the service was outstanding.

Let me explain, went in, I wanted 4 for the offer but was aware my rears were not that bad, fronts were slicks. The staff took mine off and advised the back two were only half worn and pretty good. But I still said I'd take the four. So, and this is the great bit....

They replaced my front two tyres with the new Michelins which are nitrogen filled by CostCo and put them on the rear. They then took the original two part worn rears Conti Sport 2's and refilled them with nitrogen, rebalanced them and fitted them to the front. Therefore leaving me with two brand new Michelins unfitted which I took away.

The best bit, though is that they will fit the two spare Michelins I bought FOC anytime in the future again balancing and filling with Nitrogen, fitting them to the rear and moving the rears to the front.

So that should be me sorted for tyres for the next 35K+ miles :j
    Cheers

35K? I'm lucky to get 3.5K from a rear on my bike :D

b.t.w. You would have been better putting the new tyres on the front not the back. That's where you need the grip - for steering and braking.

That's what I originally thought but it's not true. You put new on the front, yes you get more grip and pull on a front wheel drive car, but as your rears aren't as good they wont have the same grip and spin you out on bends at speed. CostCo have a video running showing the effects of this.

TBH surprised me the first time I saw it as I've always thought new on the front.

The tyres mentioned will also have an energy saving effect on your fuel bills, as they have some of the same rubber in them as Energy tyres. That's what my boss told me, anyway.
