Sky question

My eldest daughter who had Sky Plus has moved out so younger daughter has moved into her room.
There is still the Sky cable hanging loose.
Q: Where can I get a second hand cheapish Sky Box.
Q: Will I be able to receive free channels even without a Sky card in the box.
Q: Will the Sky+ cable work in an ordinary Sky box

Thanks in advance

A: Ebay (or reconditioned from sky?) OR subscribe to sky as a new customer, get the box for free, £5 install. and get the free channels.

A: I believe you can get SOME free channels without a card...

A: Yes it will.... however - you won't be able to record.

A1= Car boot, local paper, freecycle etc.
A2= Yes with only a few exceptions, you will get nearly all free channels without a card.
A3= Yes but you will only need to use one of the two cables.

    ;)
  • 4. yes, you can get a card for the extra free channels (c5 etc.?), from sky for £20

some boxes when sold on ebay may come with a card, so you might be in luck...

if you go for a sky+ box, and have no subscription, you have no recording facilities though.... if you're going for free channels, it costs £10 a month for recording..

  • Agre with above, plus additionally you won't have live pause/rewind/ffw - they are all SKY+ features.

Got a box and it works well, even with NO card and picks up a fair quantity of channels.
Why will it not pick up chanel 4 and 5. Thought they were free to air but not on this box.
  • You definitely need a card for Ch5.

I thought that Ch4 was FTA now though. You could try a force update on the box, that'll bring you up to the current software version and EPG.

You don't need a card but you'll have to programme it using "Add Channels". See notes at the bottom of this page: http://sam-radford.me.uk/ftv.htm
