Maybe you didn't notice I was responding to someone elses post.

Don't see what anything YOU said has to do with this post.
  • My son had a shock for going 43p overdrawn and was charged £28. As it was the first time this had ever happened and it was unintentional he wrote a letter to the Bank (Natwest as it happens - to their Customer Relations Manager).

He emphasised it was a first offence and it wouldn't happen again etc. To his relief they wrote back and confirmed they would cancel the charge.

As it sounds like your mother was also caught out unawares and it is a first "offence" I would suggest writing a letter in a similar vein. (I started a thread here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1149453&page=2, so you can check the excellent advice I got from forum members and how it was resolved happily I am glad to say)
  • Thanks for advice everyone, she received another two letters yesterday so an extra 2x£35!!! total now £168, arghhhh she had no idea she could pay for things if there were no funds in account the last £35 charge was applied the day I made sure there was money put into her account I credited her account approx 11am and she purchased some shopping at 15:00 but was still charged £35 for UOC, seriously makes you want to leave money under matress!!

Has anyone ever written a letter to bank and charged them a fee for the letter you are sending them? I have heard of people wanting to but wonder if anyone ever has and would the banks ever pay?!!

    Hi,
I have also fallen foul of HBOS and their charges in the last month.
I pay over £2,000 a month in to my account but transfer most of it to a high interest account with them and move money back in as I need it. I was over my overdraft for 36 hours and they charged me £35 + £28 in charges.
I wrote to them explaining that I have been a very good customer for a number of years and that I thought it was excessive. I had a reply back yesterday saying "hard luck". No compromise, no give - just take.
As a result I will be closing the account and transferring my salary and all my savings to my Nationwide account.
Of course they won't care but I shall write and tell them all the same and feel better for doing it.
I've still lost £63 of my very hard earned money!

Nothing is truly lost until your mum can't find it!

If you approach them on the basis of your 1st post (only been using a current account / debit card for a few months) ..... you may get somewhere.

If you approach them on the basis of a later post ('charge them for writing a letter') ..... you will get nowhere.

At the end of the day, via naivety or otherwise, it's a situation you have created? If you thought the account wouldn't allow debits beyond the current balance ..... what did either of you imagine would happen when she was using a DC when running on empty? I have some empathy as I ran my Mum's accounts for a couple of years. But I made sure the above could not happen - both by frequent online checks and by making sure that a healthy sized agreed overdraft was the first thing I set up.

If your Mum has been with HBOS for 'over 20 years' then a bit of 'innocence and humbleness' should go a long way to seeing off the charges. And if they do that - then getting a protective overdraft set up to guard against 're-offending' should be attainable despite the recent events.

But you either need to tutor your Mum in looking at her account online - or you do it more regularly ;)
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Thanks Mikeyorks I would never do the above but was just wondering if anyone has ever taken this approach would have been interesting to hear! I agree with you though I should have been on the ball a little more, just hadn't realised she was using it as much, wasnt able to make it to bank today because of the crazy weather so hopefully will make it there tommorow ;)
