How much??

Hi all,

Have recently been looking at flats with my partner and have done a budget to see if getting our own place feasible.

My biggest concern is the electricity. We've found the perfect 1 bed flat with not so perfect utility arrangements.

Its a fairly small 1 bed flat with storage heaters, immersion heater (I assume) electric shower and all the usual appliances etc etc etc (no gas).

Also the property's energy efficiency rating is a big fat G!! (poor insulation etc)

I know this will vary hugely but its really important we don't under budget as things are very tight. Does anyone with a similar property have a rough monthly figure for a couple in a 1 bed flat with no gas and poor insulation??

Would be really greatful if someone could throw some ball park figures my way. Or does anyone know where I could find more info?? Have been on uswitch but its a bit vague with the qs.

Also if anyone is in a similar situation any other costs of living eg food, water would be great.

Thanks!!!!

Ball park figure...£1000 a year, perhaps even £1200.
Less if the flat faces the sun and you can lock in the heat with heavy curtains or insulation pads.
The ideal would be where your flat is surrounded by other flats pumping out heat so you get the benefit.
Can't help you with water figures or food.
You don't say if you are renting, landlords love storage heaters, minimal costs to them and the tenant picks up the higher- than -gas running costs.

Been there, done that. Ancient building, 9ft+ ceilings, single glazed wooden windows, draughty doorways, top of an arch so nothing under us apart from cold wind. Storage heaters, electric everything, immersion and electric shower, as you say.

I'll ask the missus if we still have the bills for it. I'll say this, Storage heaters will keep the freeze away, but they're not great. They pump out the heat while you're at work, when you come home they're petering off. We had some luck altering the output controls during the day to spread the warmth though.

The immersion..was good. Had Economy 7, and it had a timer on it..so it came on for an hour or so, and that did fine..it got used for washing up and that was it.

Well done for budgeting! We sat down and did the figures, overestimating for everything to be on the safe side..never let us down yet.
  • Yep we're renting for now. Flat faces a bit north west I think. Probably more west. There's a flat on the back of us and one on the side so will benefit a bit. There's also a shop below but unfortunately an empty one so not much benefit there either.

Maybe I'll invest in some big wooly jumpers...
