Applying for a bank account with 0 credit rating? :/

Hey,

Been out of the country for a while.. came back late last year and basically have no credit file what so ever.. bar being on the electoral role which i just managed to put myself on in october

I'm living with parents, obviously I have a passport but have nothing in ways of proof of address (no bank account, bills.. nothing) I have had the HR department at my current workplace write a letter confirming work and address... is this going to be enough to open a basic account? (Thinking Barclys account with VISA Electron/Connect card?)

Any help greatful.

thanks

I believe i answered this question last week didn't i?

You must have a passport if you have just come back to the country, you can use that to open a basic account at Barclays.

That is what i did. Just go into branch get your passport verified by a member of staff who will photo copy it and sign the photocopy then fill in the application form and return it to the given address. HTH

How long have you been out of the country? Did you have any credit taken out and closed before you left UK?

A good start for you to look for credit card i recommend is https://www.capitalone.co.uk

34.9% APR is higher than average, however make sure you pay the bills in full and on time and use it to between 6-12 months and then you will be on your way establishing your own credit history and apply for a better credit card. The application process is painless and quick.

Yes indeed you did! I'm going into Barclays on Wednesday to set that up, thanks.

Only posted here because the other threads was in the credit card forum and just hoped for a bit more feedback :D

You could use a driving license to prove your address. HR Revenue & Customs documents stating tax codes and a letter which includes your name addres and NI number could be used too, and P45/60's are not allowed. I would have this as proof of address. You are also on the voters roll, which is good too.

I still have a copy of the Barclays basic bank account form and brochure. They need one of the following from 'ID' and 'address':

ID - passport, driving license, DWP benefit book/letter, family tax credit letter/book

Address - driving license, utility bill, tv license, bank statement, letter from DWP quoting your name/address/NI number, DWP benefit book/letter

The account could be opened in branch or post. The website and brochure says different things.

As for the previous addresses while you are abroad, I would provide proof of address of them as well, incase they ask for it. Better to be safe than sorry. I don't think UK credit reference agencies can check overseas addresses.

The Barclays debit card will be a Connect, not VISA Electron.

If Barclays declines you (which I hope doesn't happen, and there is a low chance happening), refer to this link for providers who offer basic bank accounts: http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/pdfs/bank_accounts.pdf

Yeah I have proof of address from Hong Kong, would a payslip work then as that includes NI/Tax code and address? Thanks for all the info.

Having a look on Lloyds terms for opening an account and it seems just a passport would be fine? Or am I mistaken:

    Thanks Again

Not sure about a payslip. I guess you could go into Barclays and ask them though. When you have worked, the HM Revenue should send you a tax coding letter, which you could use as proof of address. If you haven't recieved one, phone them up and ask them to send it to you (go to their website and find the number for it). Payslip would work if they ask for proof of income. Since you don't have a bank account and pay bills, the proof of ID is very limited.

I assume you are a British citizen. If so, apply for a driving license, which will have your address on it.

For the Lloyds TSB basic bank account, yes, you only need one proof of ID, which will be your passport or any sort of ID. The address will be checked against the voters roll, which you are on. The disadvantage is that you could only withdraw money from Lloyds TSB cash machines.
