Windows Explorer has stopped working - Vista

Hello - please can somebody help me?
My PC (running on Vista) suddenly stopped working yesterday when I logged out of my account, and tried logging into my husband's. I have tried to restore to last Saturday and this hasn't helped.
Basically, when I log into an account, I get the message "Windows explorer has stopped working" and then closes. I get a black screen but the PC is still flashing and whirring.
I have discovered that I can access programs etc via the task manager, but this isn't ideal.
I haven't been able to speak with Logiq customer services yet because of my work hours, but also don't have a system disk to repair the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas please? I am complete non-techie so please be patient.....:o

When it stops responding, do you tell it to check online for a solution and restart? Has it got all the latest updates?
Also, just for anyone's purpose really, it is always better to get the installation discs with a pc, just in case of problems. My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.0 -
It doesn't tell me to do anything - no clues from Windows. Is has all the updates, and I'm run spyware and virus checker.
I wouldn't have a clue where to get the installation discs from unless there's a problem.
It looks like I can use the programs, I just can't use the system like control panel etc.DMP mutual support number 174Total debt now (April 10) £0! - total paid off £30,221 or 100%I'm now debt free after 6 years!!:jNon smoker since June 2006 :j0 -
I just to get that all the time , although i didnt get a black screen just the twirling circle in the middle , if i clicked on it , it would let me open up a page , but only one window at anyone time , this would go on for a few days / week , then work fine then it would happen again ..............I had vista taken off and XP installed , had no problems since0

have you tried re running windows explorer from the task bar? (ctrl+alt+del)?
explorer.exe (I think)... does it open up then close back down again straight away?
Can you also start it up properly in safemode?
I'll go look where my logs are.. I hate vista - but it will write errors to some logs on your pc.. if you can still open files - you may be able to topen them up too..0 -
Reboot in safe mode to see if you can repeat the problem.
If it doesn't, open up msconfig and post back what you have, then it will be time to remove everything and start one item at a time until you discover what is causing the problem.0 -
Thanks everyone. I rang technical support, as safe mode didn't work and neither did restoring it back a week or so. They seemed to think that it was a problem with a windows update.
So now I've ended up having to restore back to factory settings. This hasn't worked either because winload.exe is corrupted. Waiting for them to send a disk through now.
Luckily I can borrow my brother in law's laptop to check the bank and my spreadsheets etc!DMP mutual support number 174Total debt now (April 10) £0! - total paid off £30,221 or 100%I'm now debt free after 6 years!!:jNon smoker since June 2006 :j0
