gas meter issues

Hi,

Bit of an odd one but i moved into a rented flat a couple of weeks ago and have been completely unable to locate the gas meter! The letting agents don't know where it is and thus have also not taken a reading for the day i moved in. I await my first bill to see if this is going to be a problem, but i'm guessing it probably is..
I need to provide a meter reading to my supplier but don't know where to look - any ideas?

I know this may be a silly question but have you got gas appliances? Also look in communal areas, cupbaords in comunal areas. Chances are if you cant find it, neither can your meter reader, so it may not have been read in a while so its imperative to find it. If it comes to it get the letting agent to employ a corgi registered engineer to follow your pipework in the flat and indentify where the meter is.

  • I've got gch, so yes i am connected to the gas! The flat was just refurbished and had a new boiler fitted - you would have thought someone would know where the meter was.
I have had a good root around outside and in the communal porch but to no avail - i've only found a meter for one of the other flats.

If you have just moved into a rented flat the landlord should provide you with a gas safety certificate, by law, which includes checking the emergency cut off valve. As the valve is next to the meter this may help you locate it. The valuv is another reason to know where your meter is.

I think I'd be more concerned by the lack of the meter readings on the inventory/statement of condition which the tenant should have received and agreed to when they moved into the property.

A Gas Safety Certificate could be up to 12 months old and I doubt the engineer who carried out the inspection could remember the location of the meter in a property after such time.

beccstarr - Could you ask a neighbour where theirs is? That'll probably give you a clue unless your flat is a unique, house conversion type. Even them, modern practise is often to locate all the meters together.

I've got the gas safety certificate which was done the day before i moved in. It was all a bit of a rush since i had just sold my house and the buyers were pushing to move in so i ended up moving slightly earlier than planned hence why the inventory wasn't quite ready when i moved in - it was an unfurnished flat so i figured it would be ok then when it did come they had only read the electricity meter (which they could find).
The flat is in a house conversion so isn't typical by any means. Have tried knocking on the neighbours but so far haven't managed to catch them when they are in!
The letting agents have now got onto the landlord to try and get him to find out.

As it's only 2 weeks ago, then spiro's suggestion is a good one. Contact the Corgi engineer that did the inspection and you might find he remembers where the meter/isolation valve is.
