Who has boiler cover? is it worth it?

Hi all

We have just had to have a new fuse put in our boiler, this got me thinking whether it would be worth us getting cover for our boiler. Wondered if any thinks it's a good idea and who to go with (or is it just British Gas that do it?)

Would I just be better off putting £20 in a separate account each month specifically for boiler purposes. It is likely that we will need a new boiler in next 5 years so will need to start saving for that anyway.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

There are scores of posts on the various boiler cover schemes in this forum.

BG are the biggest, and there isn't a lot in cost between the various schemes by other companies - they are all very expesive and one is a straight rip-off it seems.

Without doubt if you can find a honest reliable qualified local plumber, that will be your best bet.

Most people have the BG type scheme as a form of insurance, but as your boiler gets older, they are less inclined to give you full cover - using the "spares are unavailable" excuse.

You also have to consider what you wish to do about servicing.
  • Also, you may want to consider the following.

Ive just got home to the wife telling me our carbon monoxide alarm in the kitchen went off, she phoned the number on it and was told an emergency callout man was on his way and would be there in one hour.
Also, not to switch anything electrical on or off.

He arrived and turned off the gas supply and he wasnt impressed. he asked about servicing and she told him weve had it serviced every year for about 10+ years and the last service was less than 6 months ago.

His opinion is that its been poorly serviced and its coked up which has led to it burning inefficiently and giving off carbon monoxide.

Bear in mind that theres me, the wife and a 9 and 11 year old in this house and without the detector god knows if we'd have actually woken up tomorrow morning !:mad:

The 11 year old has been complaining of headaches etc for about 3 days on and off as well as some nausea, the wifes had a loss of appetite too strangly, ]but me and my son have been ok so there was no reason to suspect anything environmental that would be affecting us all.

The callout guy from national grid was great and also informed the wife he used to work for british gas but left as they used to get told not to hoover out the boilers in recent years as a cost cutting excercise if the probe measured between two particular readings. This was his main reason for leaving he said.

So, despite all this, the woman on the other end of the phone said that they couldnt get anyone here until Wednesday, then the supervisor that rang back an hour later (as they were apparantly in a meeting) said that they'd get one out tomorrow between 8 and 6.

The wifes right annoyed quoting corporate manslaughter at them etc as they've not fulfilled their part of the contract on the servicing given that it costs £300+ a year:angry:

I think i may start a new thread...
