Cheap old Peogeot 306's!

Options
Hi there,

Im after a cheap old hatchback as Im moving to wales and wont be able to rely on public transport any longer. I have no more that £600 to spend on the car and am a 25 yr old male with no no claims (not had my own policy yet!)

Im thinking of getting an old Pug 306 or 106 diesel as I had one once as a curteosy car and was impressed by the handling and fuel efficiency (given the age and bhp) :T

I cant decide between a 1.9 XLD or XRDT/XLDT. Does the turbo make that much difference on these?

I could also opt for a 1.5 106 XLD which would save a a bit on tax but worried about the lack of power as will occasionally be towing small boat and carrying animal feed sacks

Any suggestions or warning on what to look out for?

Thanks,
Dean.

  • 1.9 xld is the best bet, much less to go wrong as there is no turbo or intercooler. I have a P reg one on my fleet which we use for teaching people to drive which has done over 200k miles with very few mechanical problems and hardly any corrosion. Brake cylinders have needed to be replaced and we have had to replace two of the locks.
  • How much less grunt does it have with no turbo?

I used to have a Citroen Berlingo with the 1.9 lump in it,and it was about as much use as a chocolate teapot. You couldn't go for a gap in the traffic, for example, because it was lame off the mark.Fuel wise,it was no better than it's equivalent turbo stablemate. However,as Ozvaldinho says, there is much less to go wrong.

The 106 without the turbo returns silly MPG and is dirt cheap to insure.

Don't discount a petrol 106 either. I'm currently running round in a 1.1 106 which is giving over 50mpg in combined usage and having previously had a diesel 106 i can confirm it is a lot nippier than the diesel version.

I would also say that a £600 diesel 306 will have most of its useful life behind it and will be starting to show its age.
  • I have two 306 estates, one with turbo, the other with the turbo and intercooler disconnected as they're knackered. They drive the same up to about 2500RPM, where the one with the turbo takes off. They're both reasonable at hauling heavy loads, we regularly load them up with five big blokes, lots of luggage and a roofrack and it's no problem.

Things to watch for are the heater matrix rusting (just put in some radweld or similar) and the stupid self-adjusting clutch which is a real pain to fix. Also, check for the oil pump leaking oil, this will drip onto the alternator and ruin it, or the poly belt which can slip off or perish if it gets oily.

You can often find these for £500 to £800 on a T or R reg.
  • Hi guys, just wondered whether a 306 thats smoking a little bit is such a bad thing?

1.9 D Turbo 3 door with alloys, elec windows, 140k on the clock, fresh MOT and patchy but some history. £650 seems fair to me? Its smokes a little bit though dark slate smoke, does this mean its burning oil or something?
