Hi guys, just wondered whether a 306 thats smoking a little bit is such a bad thing?

1.9 D Turbo 3 door with alloys, elec windows, 140k on the clock, fresh MOT and patchy but some history. £650 seems fair to me? Its smokes a little bit though dark slate smoke, does this mean its burning oil or something?

    Dean.

is it doing this just when starting up, or all the time (including one the engine is hot)
  • Havent taken it for a long daytime test drive yet (saving that for tommorow). But appears to be most of the time.

Had an L reg 306XRDT a few years ago - good mechanically but as with all older (French) cars the electrics are a problem when they start to fail.
Certainly plenty of poke when the turbo kicks in and I used mine to tow a 5 metre RIB which it managed fine.

Smoke problems that are easily fixed = a new air filter, fuel filter (& oil change while you're at it)

If it's not cured then, you'll need to start spending on a mechanics time!!

Don't forget it's smoke test on the MOT, which will cause it to fail, even if it drives OK!!

  • Also for smoke problems, a bottle of Wynns Gold injector cleaner helps. A couple of my old peugeots smoke under hard acceleration and high revs, tends to be a bit of unburnt fuel rather than oil as they don't really use much.
White or grey somke is more serious, often means gasket/ cylinder head probs. Don't forget to check inside the oil filler cap for signs of water in the oil, I looked at some old 306's recently and a couple had milky residue inside.
