Paying Back my Student Loan in Oz??

Hi guys!
I wondered if any of u money saving experts could help me! I have a student loan of £9k - ahhhh. But next month I am emigrating to Australia. I wondered if any of you knew if I am legally required to pay it off if I am outside the UK / EU. Is there a loop hole which means if I am outside the UK so many years I don;t have to pay it?
Hope U can help!!

I know there's an 'urban legend' that if you're not in the uk for a number of years you don't have to pay it back, but i don't know if it's true!
the SLC website just says to contact them if you're living out of the UK and not paying tax...
hopefully someone else will know more!:happyhear0 -
I think your point, while undoutably valid, has been made in a nasty, uncessarily harsh way. I don't think anyone on these boards benefits from personal attacks (making or recieving) and you undermine your point in the way that you make it. Whether or not the issue of paying loans back is morally correct (in anyone's *personal* opinion), the whole ethos of this site is to be nice to eachother, not hurl anonymous insults.:happyhear0

if you emigrate properly, then they will be informed in some way or another. My brother's been living there for 3 or 4 years, and he's just paid his off now.
If you're emigrating legally and properly, then they know where you are, and what you're earning......0 -
I believe that if you are outside the UK for 6 years or more, your Student Loan is wiped. This is, therefore, the case if you go to Eire. I know a few people who live on the Northern/Southern Irish border and plan to live a few miles south in order to save several thousand pounds. However, check out https://www.studetnfinancedirect.co.uk for more info. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Its only free because you've paid for it.
Noone can have everything they want and the sooner you learn that the better.
