after me and the kids left i vowed no one would ever make us live like that again. i have incurred a bit of debt in the last 18 months (had to buy a car coz of my son, upgraded pc athough i bought a pretty cheap one, and done a few things to the house) i am now paying it off.
Rrr that brought tears to my eyes......
I just dont understand partners that are violent it really anger's  me, luckly i have never been in that situation.
But there are so many people living in these type of circumstances, it really breaks me heart especially when kids are involved.
Back to gilly's post,
I have been in that situation before its horrible one week i went to having £300+ to the next scrapping around the pennies.
Also when i was growing up, there were times like that. Luckly there was a sweet shop that took milk tokens for other items other than milk!!
I will never be in that situation again.

Tesco loan £3,000

Once on the fourth of the month i was already overdrawn limit, credit cards to the max, no more money from my mates, £4 in my pocket and 2 tickets to see Scotland v England (rugby 1990). Sold one of the tickets for £4 and a lift to the match. Offered embarrassing amounts for my ticket prior to the match, all turned down. Told the guy i sold the ticket to why i insisted on a lift for the ticket and he bought me a beer and a burger.
Great times, makes me appreciate what I have and will never return to that situation ever again.
With my four quid I went home on the bus for a couple of days. When my dad gave me a lift to the bus station he gave me a big cuddle and i felt him put something in my pocket. When I got on the bus I put my hand in my pocket and he had put £40 in my pocket. He must have know that I was skint but knew I was too proud to say so.You cant take the trousers off an elephant!0 -
I havent been in quite such a dire position but have several friends who regularly raid the penny jar for food.Just today I visited a friend who is having to sell her house and go into rented accomodation because they're so skint, she admitted to me she only had 10p in her purse.
Until I had my lightbulb moment we always used the CC for shopping etc if we were skint which we usually were but that resulted in our being in serious debt. We now have no such safety net so have to cope and budget wisely.Do what you love :happyhear0 -
I cant believe you smoked a teabag, now thats dedication! When my hubby and I first got married he lost his job and we were living giro to giro, we had 12.00 to buy food for two weeks and one of the many times the food ran out we tried to cook baked potatoes on a bbq with coal under the streetlamp outside the hse cos elec had run out too! Thankfully we have not been so desperate for a long time but I do know where u are all coming from. My hubby is now self employed and work has been very few and far between over c/mas, without tax credit we would be stuffed!Money's too tight to mention!!!0

When we married ( a long long time ago ) the first five/ten years were the worst. Young child, poor wages and a mortgage. No CC or bank account then. Both of our families had very little so could not get any help from them. Weekly wages and if a bill came in unexpected it was buy a bag of spuds and live off them.
Looking back it seems hard, but at the time it was what you had to do.
Thank goodness credit was not easy to get. Tought us that a pound in you'r pocket is the best friend you will ever have and to cut you'r coat from the cloth you have.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
I once had to live on tesco value bread and value baked beans for 4 days. First three days were ok but then the prepay elec meter ran out. Cold baked bean sandwhiches are the pits.

I've been so short that I've actually drawn the last 86p out of my bank just to buy something for tea. The bank teller looked at me like I was something she'd dragged in on her shoe and I have never been so embarrassed in my life. Still, that was a few years ago and things have improved beyond believe but I can still feel my cheeks burn when I think of that day.
In the same week I can remember that the only thing we had for tea one night was a couple of slices of value bread and a tin of Sonic the Hedgehog spagetti that someone had given us. We had to eat them because we couldn't afford to buy anything else but I think that sickly, horrible spagetti served up on dry toast was probably the worst meal I've ever had. When funds get tight these days me and DH still joke that we're going to have to have a 'Sonic' meal if we're not careful and this makes us pull in our belts just a little tighter0 -

People on this board are amazed at how little I can manage to live on. But believe me the money I get now is like a fortune compared to what I used to get.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
I'm actually going through that at the mo and have been sine the begining of the year. Thankfully i can see an end to it, i'll be back on track 21 Feb. Haven't been on a spending spree infact christmas was very poor this year its been a simple case of being hit with extra big bills such as the phone bill due to my father being in hospital with a stroke and needing extra petrol etc. In fact ive managed to shop for a week on our local markt for less than £10, i have to say thought that the freezer was well stocked and did need running down whioch i will have to re stock once the money situation is running freely again.0
