Wowzers! I have to admit I have always paid cash in hand but that is a crazy amount! Even worse when you consider that half of that will go to the agency and not the worker.
Good idea from stevetodd about advertising yourself. If your husband can't be about, could you get a friend to sit with you whilst interviewing?
My LA had an incentive for those in receipt of Direct Payments where they paid your employers insurance. Might be worth looking into?
Good luck xGone ... or have I?0 -
I had a cleaner a couple of years ago when I was self employed and a lone parent, sometimes its necessary. I used the yellow pages, got quoted rates and went for a local firm at £8 per hour. Have to admit it was the best thing I had ever bought myself. I only wish I could justify having one now.0

I am surprised that the hourly rates I have been quoted seem much higher than others experiance, I am still waiting to hear back from a few other companies, perhaps they will be less.
I am unsure about advertising and employing someone on my own, I like the idea of there being a 'boss' I can speak to if there are any problems etc. I am not sure I would enjoy interviewing either. Saying that I will give it some though and talk about it will my OH.0 -

The other thing to consider is that if you go through a reputable firm, included in the hourly charge should be some form of Insurance, that protects you (theft, damage to property) and the employee (in case of accident etc whilst at work).0 -
Hi what about a relative or friend that could help you out, you could pay them.
I have Me too and I know what an horrid illness it is.
best wishes

No I have thought about that but I don't think I could expect someone to come every week. If I pay someone then I know that they will do everything that needs doing and I wont feel guilty.0

My brother cleans my elderly aunts house every week. Just an idea. Hope you manage to sort something out.Official DMP Mutual Support Club Member No 300 -
Does your local council have a list of reputable traders? I know that Birmingham City Council have such a list that they publish for old and vulnerable people to use when looking for builders etc. It might be worth asking your local council.0

Hi purple
I am on benefits and have a cleaner. I am not able to do many tasks any more so I need the help.
I too am in kent and was given a list of agencies in the area. I can email you the numbers of the ones they have on their list if you would like them.0 -
I went through occupational therapy when I decided I needed a cleaner as they can provide you with a list of people. Also think about asking for an assessment as the costs can be met by direct payments. Here's a link:

It is worrying going through the assessment, but they are really nice and can ease alot of stress should you qualify for direct payments. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0
