TomTom Go - HELP!!!

I tried to load the software that came with my dads TomTom Go last night, but everytime I selected the "Install Win USB" (or similar) option, nothing happened.
Do I need a code to activate the software, and if I do how do I do it?
I spent about 2 hours searching the internet and trying all different combinations of connecting the TomTom to the PC and turning it on but nothing happened.
The PC doesn't even recognise that the TomTom is plugged in and I was wondering if thats because I haven't managed to install the USB option?
Can anyone help - I've no idea what to try next
