  • Hi DKLS,

I am pretty much in the same position as James is. I wonder if you/anybody could advise something for me. I have experience (non-commercial) in C/C++ software development.

    Best Regards,

    SI

I have contacted 3 companies, and none are taking on work experience roles, paid or unpaid, in fact one will be announcing redundancies today, so its looks poor for my contacts in Leeds.
  • Thanks DKLS for your time. Having a postgraduate degree from the uni with no commercial experience, it is really hard to break in the SW industry, but then it is not unusual for the uni-leavers. Lets see how far I go on the job search before I give up the ghost in the graveyard of economy.

Does your uni, have any spin out companies?, there may be some vacancies or opportunities to get into SW. Thats how I started after graduating.
  • There is a very famous one SSTL in the university of Surrey but have to check with the careers service if they offer any experience roles. Thanks for pointing out, any way. To be honest, I feel more support on MSE forums as compared to the so called job-forums.

I guess, I can safely assume you are also in the computing. Having said that, do you think there are any prospects for a Ph.D. graduate to enter the software industry. A few recruitment agents have told me the companies might think I would get bored with them soon, some say I have spent too long in the uni. To be honest, software development is the only thing on the earth I wana do as I don't want to do any more blue sky research and I really enjoy coding stuff, can sit hours and hours in front of the computer screen. What do you think?
