The worse decision I made was banking with them! I'm currently awaiting a call back from a manager for ridculous and unjust charges placed on my account.
They do everything by letter,
you'll have to wait 8mins every time you call to speak to someone.
They fob you off, and can never transfer you to another dept!
Long story short I went overdrawn and paid this off. Call advisor told me I would receive no more charges, as they charge £5 for every month overdrawn.
They put a late charge on anyway, making me overdraw again and then sent me a letter today saying they've been charged £5 a DAY for the past two months.
They then said all they could do was transfer my case to some payments team and it would take 2weeks to even look at it. So that means with charges put on for no reason £9.99 (I was in credit 0.01p) and the £100 they have put on and not told me about for not paying the other charge not telling me about, they want to put on another £70 before they will sort it!
And this after giving me a PPI refund!Debts to date: A&L Loan: Paid Off!, :TMMU:Paid Off!, :T

LL I got the same letter telling me to pay it all back within 3days!!! I'm going to the financial ombudsman because this is outrageous and illegal!Debts to date: A&L Loan: Paid Off!, :TMMU:Paid Off!, :T
Student Loan £10,000(+4,000 in interest)£14,000, :rotfl:

More than a year after I started this thread, the ombudsman has actually found against me. A&L made me overdrawn by £5 und when I realised it, it was £85. They actually froze it at the arbitrary figure of £205. And that is what I allegedly owe them.
I now have to contest the decision which the ombudsman clearly dragged out until the court case was settled. I would be very grateful for any tips and pointers.
What really annoys me is that I would have sorted this but there was no warning about the the outrageous charges on the current account statement as it has to be on credit card statements about what was to be applied.0 -
i notice you mentioned that you hoped they would close the account - they wouldn't have done this unless you asked them to.
this leaves you open to the same question as post #10 - did you credit the account with A&L's standard requirement of £500 a month? If you don't credit this then you are charged a £5 under-funding fee.
it sounds as if this is where the original £5 has come from, and the subsequent are their (Frankly reidiculously inflated) overdraft exceeding charges. If this is the case, challenging it is futile as the £5 under-funding fee is clearly outlined in their T&C's for current accountsDebts at LBM (May '08) £5760 - Lloyds CC £4260, Lloyds OD £1500;Debts as of May 28th 2011:Santander CC: £0.00Lloyds OD : £0.00DFW Nerd #1247 - Proudly dealt with my DebtsOlympic 2012 Challenge #12

No, nothing to do with underfunding. It is a current account I opened in 1996. I only used it for short term finance because the overdraft charge was a £5 flat fee per month. I would have been stupid not to use funds at those conditions.
The issue is that I paid the account off and left £5 for them to collect. A&L were closing my account, not me. But they charged another £5 the following month without me realising.0 -

There are many of us who regret banking with A+L. If an offer looks too good to be true .......... it usually has strings attached:rotfl:
I think you will find that they changed the T&Cs you should have received a letter enclosing an A5 document with very small print."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

My OH went 38p overdrawn and now owes them £185.38p.
I'm bloody furious with him for not checking his account sooner and with A&L for not informing him sooner.
When he was in danger of going O/D with RBS they phoned him on the day and told him to deposit funds now!

What are you gonna do about it?
There is no way the worst bank in Britain is getting away with extortion.0 -
I made him phone Customer services who were willing to give him a gesture of £20 towards the account. He refused and has lodged a complaint.
We then went into branch and spoke with the manager and she said that she no longer has control over this and cant waive the fees but told us to cover the OD amount to bring us into credit and wait for the complaint to be dealt with.
Brnach manager was actually very nice!

I'm still fuming though! OH is staying well clear of me!"The journey of 1000 miles commenced with a single step"0 -
The bank charges decision has put a halt to any common sense as far as banks are concerned. If they charge £1,000 a day, or a million in overdraft charges it is all perfectly ok. Anything goes and there is no help.0
