Happy Australia day, have you got a little southern cross flag and temp tattoo? I love the way aussies celebrate national day, Lots of pride. Reminds me of 1977 silver jubilee! :D

Funny you should say that, I think Aussies aren't really that Nationalistic. Good excuse for a day off, BBQ and a couple of tinnies though!

We also have the Queen's Birthday public holiday in June. If that not an excuse for a day off I don't know what is!

What have the media in oz made of US, Spain, Ireland & UKs house bubble burst and international banking failure? Do the media think that their economy is immune to the rest of the western worlds problems? Does anyone you know talk of the comparisons? Has the receession started to bite yet?

Sorry for all the questions but i am interested because gf is an oz and we have spent lot of holiday time there in the last few years.

I may not be the best person to answer this, as I'm living in London now, but I do try and keep up with the Aussie news online.

Australia has very good relations with both East and West and are increasingly trading with the East. Our current PM used to be ambassador to China and speaks Mandarin fluently which can only help this along.

Whilst the US/UK bubbles have burst, the Aus media is still somewhat in denial (but coming around) that it will happen or that it will be as bad. Arguments include lack of available housing and lack of building in the past 5 years.

I always understood that Australia Day is National BBQ Day.

Ansac Day is Stiff Upper Lip/Hate the Poms Day - Gallipoli and all that, don't get me started.

Queen's Birthday is National Historical Anomaly Day.

There seems to have been a sudden realisation that Aus is a trading nation and so in massive trouble too. There is an idea that the housing market can be saved by Magic Man Rudd and kept at historic highs. The chief argument seems to be, 'house prices don't fall'.

    .

You have forgotton about the various "horse race" holidays that vary by state or district.
    Melbourne Cup, Adelaide Cup etc

Public holidays to engage in those favourite aussie hobbies - gambling & drinking.

    Come in Spinner!

Well Melbourne Cup Day is National* 20 minutes off.

I know nothing about Adelaide except that they're Free Settlers and that they're still annoyed that they lost the Grand Prix. Oh and that they're the other end of one of possibly the most beautiful main road in the world.

*NSW and Vic anyway. I think the whole country however.

I was in Port Macquarie Australia day 2006 and it was like a village fete cica 1970 something. Every child and lots adults had temp tattoos and small flags in hats. The local associations from charities, bussinesses and government had stalls and people wandered about chatting and being pleasant! Hard to believe isn't it. The last time i can remember community spirit in the UK was 1977!
In the evening new citizens stood up and swore in front of the community to be loyal to Australia and uphold the democratic rights, liberties and laws.

My expereince of Australia was a bit different from yours i guess

Australians in urban Australia don't get drunk by and large.

The guys in the country drink like Poms though. They still put it away.

dunno, i was there over christmas, brisbane, sydney and melbourne seemed to contain their fair share of people who were drinking like they meant it.

granted it wasn't anything like hastings' high street of a friday, but then where is.
