Ongoing problem for a while

I've had my Dell Laptop since February Last year and up until late summer had no problems with it.

Then one day the system crashed and ever since then if I leave the laptop on for a while (typically 30-60 mins) without actively doing anything on it then it completely freezes and i have to force it to shut down.

I've run a whole series of scans on it including Windows Defender, CCleaner, Adaware, Norton etc... to see if it may have been anything that those can fix. Sometimes it does get fixed for a day or 2 but quickly goes back to the way it was.

I've also checked device manager and there's no conflicts.

I'm running Vista premium on the laptop and the spec is Intel Core 2 duo T7500 2.2ghz with 3gb RAM

I'm not sure if this is a Vista problem or a hardware problem all I know is it's annoying and I can't think of any solutions short of formatting and reinstalling everything which I'd like to avoid.

Anyone that can help me is a legend!!

(I must add the system originally crashed after I tried to install Nokia PC suite and it's drivers which I have now removed!)

If you leave it running idle, DEFRAG will startup (By default), which has on occasion caused problems for some. Disable defrag from auto starting for starters

Then download HIJACK THIS (Top right)
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
SCAN and post the log so we can see whats running

Thanks. Not sure what parts you wanted so I copied the whole lot. I used to have "hijack this" but thought it was complicated to use and didn't want to F up my system even more!

Hijack is NOT to be taken lightly. But theres no harm in keeping it on (So long as people arent going to 'play about' with it :p)

May as well try some basics

Then wait and see like you said ~

    Download SUPERANTISPYWARE (Top right)
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/
    UPDATE and SCAN

    Download CCLEANER (Top right)
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Run the top 2 scans (Backup the registry when it asks)

Download GLARY UTILITIES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD NOW')
    http://www.download.com/Glary-Utilities/3000-2094_4-10508531.html
    Run the ONE CLICK scan

The only other thing im concerned about is Norton. It can on occasions create problems of this nature (and others)

    Try disabling windows defender

  • Are you getting any error messages when it freezes?

Can you take a look in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer and look under System for any red exclamation marks around the time that the crash occured and post them here.

It could be over heating, download Speedfan and report back with the temperatures.

Just tried that now and when I double click event viewer it says it cannot open the file and to open it windows needs to know what program to use to open it. Then when I search the web it says "unknown file"!!!

That's Vista for you...full of surprises!
