european car insurance, poor service! help please???

my partner and i have recently been working in france, as a condition of my partners job she had to have transport, so upgraded her insurance to european cover, as it cost more money to upgrde to european cover we assumed the service would be the same. Unfortunatly my partners car developed an electrical fault that caused a small fire, the car was towed as she also had european breakdown cover, however when the insurance company were informed she was told it could take upto 12 weeks to sort out, something we were not told when paying the extra money for european cover, it actually took them six weeks to tell us the car was a write off, and a hire car was only offered days before the car was declared a write off, so my parner was left in france for six weeks with no idea what was goin on and no transport, she has recieved no pay out yet and cannot afford another car and as a result may lose her job. we have been offered the full value of the car but no compensation for the six weeks she not been able to work or for the problems the company have caused us:
Has anyone had similar issues with insurance companys?? And how did you fare?? do we have a chance of claiming any compensation from the insurance co. Finally i would just like to add BE CAREFULL WHEN PURCHASING EUROPEAN COVER, CHECK THE SERVICE WILL THE SAME AS IN THE UK
