Ideas of cost of increase for car insurance

Hi

Was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how much it would cost to add me to my partners car insurance when i have passed my test.

background. hes 24, had the car for a year, full year no claims, car kept on drive at night and he pays £750 a year fully comp including legal fees. its a 2006 toyota avensis 2 litre something turbo diesel i think!

im 23 female and would be driving it for about 5 months of the year when hes not here.

im thinking it would go up by a couple of hundred quid but hes thinking it will double. any ideas before we add me to the policy?

thanks

Why dont you do some test quotes on confused.com, one based on just your man and another adding you on, to see what the general difference is?

Of course, if your partners insurance is not due, you may be at the mercy of his current insurers charging what they like to add you on. It may be possible, to ask then now, on the basis of you having passed your test but making it clear its just for "test/information purposes".

When I added my wife to my policy, before she passed her test (she'd been a provisional licence holder for 10 years), my policy costs went down a £1!!

When she finalled passed, it made no difference to my policy costs, I just had to pay £20/£30 admin fee or something. Mind you, I am 10+ years claim free driving (except for a couple speeding tickets and a no fault accident).
  • the policy has just been renewed and paid up front for the year, ive tried searching through some other sites but its just coming up either stupidly more expensive or the same price which doesnt make sense to me. his current insurer seems to be one of the stupidly expensive ones so im not sure if phoning will make any difference. if not then i will be waiting till its due for renewal before being added.

    thanks for the advice

it does make sense, cause as you said, you will be driving the car for 5 months out of the 12 months. So the risk pattern will change. Insurance company X who you are insure now, see this as more of a risk for whatever reason (one being probably you are a new driver.) Hence they add say £250 to the premium to make it £1000. Now insurance Y, see this as less of a risk overall, cause they say female drivers are safer drivers (People please do not start to get into an arguement about female drivers are / are not safer drivers, it is just common knowledge some insurance companies think that.) So cause you said now you will be driving, that insurance company will give you a bigger discount cause half the time you will be driving the car, so ok they might of quoted £950 initally, but once you were added, your quoted went down to £800...

Happen to me few years ago with Norwich Union, added my wife and it went down by £100.

Oh one other thing, if he just renew you do know he can cancel it. Even with the fees might be worth it, but there might not be fees anyway.
