Photocard Driving Licence
Hi,
I'm about to exchange my old paper licence for a new photocard one (due to change of address) and I've noticed that although the paper ones don't need to be renewed until you're 70, the photocard licences need to be renewed every 10 years.
I've searched the DVLA website (and Google) for the expected cost of this future renewal but can't find any info. Has anyone managed to find this out.
Thanks.
RoCas

Since it will be 10 years until you need to renew your photocard I imagine that any price that exists today will be long out of date.
By that time it will all be recorded on your National Identity card.
( Or seeing how civil liberties are getting abolished left right and centre its likely that in ten years you will have an under skin chip to provide all the info the police need to know about you. )qui tacet consentire -

I guess you're right - I was really just interested to know if the renewal would be chargeable but I expect it will be. Any excuse for another hidden tax.0

Ever one to rise to a task!
I have spent a while checking and I see what you mean. There is nothing about renewal costs after 10 years.
The only clues I can find are its free to renew at 70, for medical reasons or if you drive buses or lorries.
I guess its free right now but since they were introduced in July 1998 they will have to decide soon what to do with the renewals. I guess they will charge as it will involve scanning a new photo and its a good excuse to tax us as you say.qui tacet consentire -

Thank you for taking the time to check, Fraser. I appreciate it.

This is why I've never changed to the photo ID one. I passed a couple of months before the paper licenses ended and if I keep hold of that then I don't have to renew it every few years.
The problem is I'm probably going to be moving house in a year so I guess I can only get a photo one when I change my details.0 -
Your paper counterpart is still valid until you are 70. It is only the photocard part that has a 10 year life on it.
For the time being I believe it is free to renew, the same as it is when you change address, name, etc.0
