MSN Messenger - Help needed

My sister has been having problems for the last week or so with her computer and in particular Messenger. She thinks she may have had a virus and was advised by PC World to take everything off and reinstall everything again. She did this but is still having problems. She can get to her hotmail to read her mail, but cannot access Messenger at all. She has reinstalled Messenger, but this still does not work.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There has been a virus around disguised as Messenger Version 8 beta. Did she get this before the problems? If she did, it could have wiped her original messenger.
The virus part is HERE . There is a thread about the genuine Messenger Beta 8 HEREI only exist in my own mind - if you can see, hear or read me, you are a product of my imagination.0
