Looking for a credit card for a small charity to USE

Hi

I am a Trustee of a small local charity. We are registered with the charities commission and are also a company limited by guarantee.

I am trying to find details of credit cards that we might be able to apply for to make purchasing larger items easier. At the moment, our staff have to use their own credit cards and then reclaim the amount through petty cash.

Searching the net for "charity credit card" only produces results for cards aimed at members of the general public that then donate a small amount to charity every time the card is used.

I have been able to find cards aimed at small businesses but their application processes ask for details which do not apply to us (we aren't sole traders, don't have directors, and can't give details of the previous year's profit, etc).

Does anyone know of any credit cards aimed specifically at (or suitable for) small charities such as ourselves?

Cheers
Rob

If you are a company limited by guarantee, to the best of my knowledge the company will still have at least one director?

A company limited by guarantee can still post a profit.

You should speak to your bank, as this is the easiest option for a company credit card (which is what you effectively required - as you are still a company).

Thanks for that. We only became a company limited by guarantee last year and are so used to referring to ourselves only as Trustees (as required by the Charities Commission) that it had slipped my mind that we did indeed become Directors of the new company :)

Our bank do offer a credit card, for which they charge £50 per year. I guess I was wondering if there were other cards aimed at charities rather than private sector companies (even though we are effectively a company).

Unlikely as it would be a very niche market. If you want a credit card to be in the name of the entity not an individual, your bank's company credit card is the easiest option. There are other options such as Amex who offer company credit cards, but these are still guaranteed by the individual which may or may not be a concern.

Thanks for that. I shall get on to the bank to find out more information.

  • Does it have to be a credit card?
A lot of banks will offer debit cards to charity accounts.

Hmmm - no, it doesn't have to be. To be honest, it hadn't crossed my mind :) Thanks for that suggestion...
