Using another bank to pay cheques into my Smile Account

Hi-

I have a current account with smile, and pay a lot of cheques in using bank giro credits. In the past I've either sent them by post or used the Post Office (there isn't a Co-op branch near me), but I'm getting a bit tired of doing this.

So I was wondering if I could use my bank giro credits to pay in cheques at another bank. Is this possible? Would it affect the clearance times? And would I get charged?

In particular, I get a lot of cheques drawn from NatWest. So could I pay in these NatWest cheques to my smile account at a NatWest branch without trouble?

Thanks in advance for advice.

  • It depends entirely on the bank. HSBC would accept HSBC cheques into a Smile account, I know that for certain - however, you might have to pay a charge if you don't have an account there (not 100% certain).

Not at mine they don't  My local branch, and another in London near Holborn refuse to take any credit that is not an HSBC credit, I can't even pay a credit card bill to another bank using an HSBC cheque. The official explanation when I queried it once was that they insist on being 'party' to the credit. Incidnetally I worked at another bank for a few years as well and we also wouldn't take HSBC (or any other) credits in regardless of whether there was an accompanying 'house ' cheque. It all changed with the last lot of banking regulations a few years back, before then we took everything for everyone and just charged a small fee for doing so.
