When to send out Save the Date cards?

Just wondering... how soon would you send out Save the Date cards for a bank holiday (Saturday) weekend wedding?
Don't want to send them out ridiculously early but am aware that many people would perhaps want to book a long weekend away!

I got a "save the date" last October for a wedding in October this year! They had managed to get pic of the venue onto fridge magnets and put a nice poem in with them so it is all stuck on the fridge and I can't forget!"Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!

I've seen some gorgeous magnetic ones on ebay but don't wanna order them too early - I'm already starting this weekend to get some ideas for my dress even though it's over 2 years away (28 May 2011)! I just like to get things done early if possible

I would say maybe you would be a bit premature then! I would leave it until next year as who knows what way your life is going to turn and you may send some out to people that you may not be speaking to come the wedding..."Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!

Im gettin married same day as you (28th May 2011) i have got my venue an church booked and i bought my wedding dress yesterday :-) only coz i feel in love when went to try it on an just had to have it lol
I order my save the date cards last oct i think it was an have them stored at the moment but i think ill be sending them between a year and 9 months beforehave the best little boy in the world :j

We get married in August (this year) and haven't sent them yet. We picked them up this weekend (they are FAB, we love them) and will start sending them out over the next few weeks.

I must be getting old, I have never heard of save the date cards , nor have I ever received them / one, are they expensive? do you really need them?

With my wedding day being the saturday of a bank holiday weekend and not having many children coming my mum made the point that people may be booking to go away for the weekend so thats the only reason im sending them out so early.
Plus most people know about our date anyway so i think it will be just a case of confirming to them we are defo getting marriedhave the best little boy in the world :j

I think they are a great idea especially if you are getting married at popular times like school holidays when people are likey to be away and planing on booing a hoiday.
I would say a year ahead would be ideal
