Getting rid of mould/mildew on painted wall

Hi there,
I have googled this and can't really find anything useful so hoping someone here can help!

I live in a rented flat whcih has a upvc french door going out onto the graden. Around the edges or the door, on the adjacent wall and the wooden glossed 'windowsill' at the bottom, I have had a continuous problem with like a mouldy, mildew stuff growing. I've made sure the vents are open on the door, and I've tried cleaning regularly with bleach, mildew remover, etc etc and nothing seems to get rid of it. As it's a rented property I'm a bit worried that it will damage the house and lead to me losing some deposit, but I've done battle for 3 years with no luck!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks,
x

It sounds like there is a problem with damp below the damp proof course. If all your efforts have had no effect it will only get worse so if it was me I would tell the landlord. Repairs to the properly must be his responsibility surely. The problem might have been there before the UPVC door was installed. There will be specialist products on the market for dealing with this probably but it needs an expert to put it right and you shouldn't have to pay.

Thanks Jake'sGran - I thought it might have been something to do with damp as there is often condensation on the windows even though the vents are open (and clear, I've checked!)

I wasn't sure about mentioning to the landlord as wasn't sure if it was the sort of thing that would come under my responsibility or theirs, if you see what I mean. I don't want them to think I'm a dirty so-and-so and charge me lots of money because I'm really not!

    Thanks for the advice

Hello Silaqui. Just wanted to say that if he is a good landlord he will want to know about this. The only thing I can see that he/she might complain about is that you have left it a long time before telling him. Not to worry. Good luck anyway.

Thank you, I am going to let them know soon. It has been there just a little bit for a while, which I have been trying to keep on top of but over this winter it seems to have got quite bad so I will let them know that it hasn't improved. I guess its not like theres anything I could have done, I keep the place warm and ventilated.
    Cheers for your help :)
