changing home insurers whilst claiming

If home insurance is up for renewal whilst in the middle of a claim, is it ok to move to another insurer if they are cheaper (and obviously the claim is factored into the quote)? Or would the current insurer kick up in some way?

Policy is up for renewal 25/2 and a claim for water damage from a burst pipe is in its early stages (assessor visiting 4/2).

Current insurer is Tesco.

In theory there is no reason why you shouldn't move.
A couple of issues I can think of.
    1) The current company have less incentive to keep you happy as an ex-customer rather than a current one. If they are fair and even handed this shouldn't matter, but if there are disputes then clearly they have less motivation to keep you happy if it comes down to a discretionary situation. You have to weigh this up against the savings.
    2) If the new company ask for the size of the claim, you won't be able to give them that information.

It might be worth discussing your lowered quote with the existing insurer, because it's possible that they may match it and then you get the best of both worlds.

hadn't thought of asking Tesco to match the quote - good idea lisyloo.

The claim is probably going to be around £4k in total (possibly a bit more), by mid Feb, should (hopefully) be moved along a bit, so a bit more definite figure will be known.

Going to get range of quotes over the next week or so to see which is best.
