Email Addresses

Options
Hello

I am not particulary technically savvy, but I want to have my own personal email address that is not dependent on one particular ISP. I would also like to have one main identity and other available email address to minimise the risk of spam.

I would appreciate feedback on the options available to me as a techie dunce and the likely monthly or annual cost. I must stress that future reliability and flexabilty is my main concern.

Many thanks in anticipation of a reply or two......

    welcome to reply two... :)

There are plenty of free email options avaialble the most popular are

    GMail : https://www.gmail.com
    Hotmail: https://www.hotmail.com (me@hotmail.com) or https://www.hotmail.co.uk (me@hotmail.co.uk)
    Yahoo https://www.yahoo.com/mail

I would recommend Yahoo Mail but if you can get to grips with GMail, there'll be less spam and adverts for you!

You will always be dependant on a company for your e-mail, even if you were to run your own e-mail server as you still need an ISP for your internet connection.

If you want to get your own address with your own domain name part after the @ then you will need to look into getting mail hosting with a another company. Most web host companies offer such a service - take a look at 1&1.co.uk in their Domains > Instant Mail - £0.69 a month and you get 5 POP3 email addresses, webmail and autoresponders. You would also receive "unlimited email forwarding" which means you get another email address that you can forward to your main address, but your main address isn't given out - this means you could create an email forward for everyone you give your address to.

    more dollar$ than sense
  • Avoid using just your name in the email address. Use plenty of numbers etc to avoid blanket email spammers.
  • If you want to have a more personal address, you might consider buying your own domain name from someone like these people and have them host your email for you. It costs money (about 20 quid for two years IIRC) but you could have 5x1Gb mailboxes with Outlook and web access for the money. So, as long as the domain is available you could have me@myownpersonaladdress.co.uk plus 4 others - maybe for the wife/husband, kids, dog...

It doesn't matter which ISP you're with, either.

Some ISPs will prevent you from connecting to mail servers other than their own (the major ones don't do this, but the less known ones do it to make you use their email system) so Outlook and 1and1 may not work if this is the case - Webmail would have to be used.
