Watcha, I've been deligently working on website and now I want to get it up and running I find I can't FTP from my PC.
I put a very basic version up a couple of weeks back from someone elses PC, but wanted to update the bits I've done recently. I've tried using the in built FTP tool in dreamweaver (times out) and also downloaded filezilla ( can connect and see things, but uploads files with 0 bytes...)
I was told that windows firewall can be a little over zealous, so I tried switching it off for a quick upload. Seemed to work although only in bursts of about 5 files before it timed out and needed to be set going again. But now I can't see anything on my website, its as if its completely blank (not even the hosting companies placeholder appears???)
Firewalls back up now, but a bit none the wiser about what's going on.
I've mcafee internet security installed, use a netgear wireless router to access the internet via a reputable ISP (nildram).
Any thoughts on my FTP woes???
E.M.

Have you tried simply entering the ftp:// address into your web browser's address bar and then logging in and copying files that way? If that works, then there are no problems connecting to your web host.
Next, try downloading SmartFTP - it is free for non-commercial use. Try using that to access your site and transfer files, it is quite easy, enter your ftp address (minus the ftp:// part) into the address box, username and password in appropriate boxes, hit enter on keyboard and wait for connection to load. Then you can just select files and copy them in windows explorer, then right-click and paste the files in SmartFTp, wait for them to upload.0 -
WOw, a lot of things could have gone wrong.
See if you can access your ftp site from https://www.net2ftp.com and see if the index file is still there as I suspect the blamk page your seeing is that 0 byte one.0 -
tigermatt, I fell at the first fence. I closed the ftp window after it stalled for about 3 minutes attempting to transfer a small html file... again, I can see things, just not upload??
nads, net2ftp let me see it and even let me transfer some pages, not sure I want to use this to upload all my image files though?? (lots of them and the java upload doesn't seem to upload them to anywhere specific??)
Even the file I transfered with net2ftp can't be seen (if I type in it's url...)

in net2ftp in will uplaod to the first "view" you saw unless on the Uplaod screen you set the "Uplaod to directory" to a relevant direcoty e.g. images
When you try to view the webpage you uplaoded via net2ftp, whats the error message you get in your browser?0 -

You mention you have McAfee Internet Security running. I presume this includes a McAfee Firewall. Check in there if you have it enabled and make sure SmartFTP can connect to the LAN (Local Area Network) and the Internet.
Also check your router isn't blocking outbound port 21.0
