If you already have a decent DVD player to go with it I'd be tempted by the Yamaha AV57 - AV Receiver and speakers package. You need the amp to power the 5.1 surround sound.

Peter Tysons - excellent firm, have it here for £179.

What connectors do you have on the back of the TV? as if you have the 5.1 output sockets you can just plug a 5.1 system straight into your DVD player rather than buying an amp.

I picked up a targa DVD player from Lidl (£20) which has loads of connectors and also a silvercrest 5.1 surround sound system (£40) and the system provides good results for such a cheap setup.

If you have a Richer Sounds store near you they sell some good cheap items

that's a pretty good price, i have the amp and speakers, bought seperately, and paid more than that for them without the DVD.

Decent amp too, not put the speakers up yet though, only had them a month

I got the av57 system from same retailor, its a great piece of kit amp is big and speakers small but take a lot of volume, I never dared have it on full in our living room. That price is without dvd player.

when i first got my amp i was testing it with Usual Suspects and a cheap Bush speaker system. Turned it up to about +20 just as somebody shot through a window. Dog down the street went off it's head it was that loud.

Its fine for music, dvds and radio use it every day. Not normally for tv though but thats because of my setup/room.

What is a a 5.1 output socket? PS I have a dvd player already, what else do you need to know ... *blushes* i know these are silly questions i am asking..
  • the 5.1 outputs are 6 plugs, centre, front left, front right, rear left, rear right and subwoofer. If you just have the 2 outputs then you'd need the amp to run it all through.
  • 5.1 will also run out of a digital output, optical or coaxial rather than the 6 rca (phono)connectors and you need fewer wires.

if your buying from scratch and are on a budget buy last years model, richer sounds always have them on offer and most places will have some older stuff too.

You need a source, DVD player/ditital TV box/video older TV's didnt have audio out connectors but newer ones do but not everything is broardcast in dolby digital so the amp will convert the stereo outbut to dolby pro logic (the simpsons is realy good)

I spent £2500 on my setup and you can spend alot more with ease. read the magazines likewhat hifi go and hear as many systems as you can the proper hifi shops will have listening rooms

you say its for the bedroom maybe you could try the smaller in a box systems but I have had no experiance of them

I know absolutely nothing about this but am interested. Are there wireless options nowadays or do you have to have wires all round the room?
