  • Can someone in authority please look into the increasing number of pay to bid auction sites, such as SWOOPO and MADBID.
There seems to be so much room to con the public with planted bidders shill bidding etc.
been watching the site MADBID for about a week and the same names appear all the time.
When you think about how much you have to spend to buy bids (over £1 each on MADBID) and each bid only raises the auction price by 1p, and each time you bid the auction time increases, even if you bid on the final second, These bidders who are always there either have more money then sense(as they seem to bid even when there are minutes left) or they are planted bidders, i know where my money would go!
It's got to be a con, there seems to be no regulations or accountability.
    Someone, start to look closer..

They're not a scam as such, if they were then they would probably have been quickly shut down, but they are certainly tilted in favour of the site owners.

As long as you have a clear idea of what to expect, and know what you are doing, then you can get some genuine bargains, BUT most people just wander in blindly and lose a lot of money, hence the venom spewed all over the webs by bitter losers of cash.

Personally I avoid them, but others sing the praises of them.

am asking as i was looking on the site yesterday with intention of bidding. I cant work it out at all. I was watching an item yesterday intending to bid in last second when the auction ended with my pc shwing it still had 2 seconds to run. therewas another iem with lots of bidders and somehow that one ended. not sure how people actually win as there seem to be people bidding all the time so how ther could have been a lull is beyond me. just wondered if anyone has won something they have bid on

There are a number of threads spread all over MSE about this one and also Madbid. They appear to be more akin to gambling than a real auction and probably best avoided unless oyu have a lot of money to lose.

  • Someone must have won, but what was the *real* price they paid for that 17.94 PS3?
At the end of the day you're best using sites like eBay, Amazon or Play.com where you can actually get some genuine bargains with eBay potentially saving the most, but with the most risk (but don't assume eBay will always be cheaper, I've seen stuff sell at higher prices on eBay than they go for on Amazon!).
I guess the best moto is 'Buyer beware!'
  • When I Wanted A Wii, I Had a look on Swoopo.

Me and my dad actually did a 7 hour session on Excel calculating the chances of winning (and still making a reasonable profit) a DS LITE for example.

The chances of winning are extremely small. because of the 75P for each bid rule, if it wasn't like that, it'd be losses for Swoopo each year.

The Brainlessness of people is staggering.

As long as there are simpletons who think they are in with a chance of winning, these sites will always be around.
Anyone with a single ounce of intelligence can see this is a complete scam.

    Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.
