HI everyone am new to this site so ere go's.. please can i ask a Q, my son gets DLA middle rate and low rate mo, he's 10yrs old and as ASD, he has just been put on Melatonin ive told DLA and she put it on his records, put i was told i should ask them to look at his claim again , i just was wondering if him DLA money woud go up ? or should i just leave it.. thank you.0

Our case was a little different to yours millymolly because we could put in a claim for the mobility side of things from when my son turned three (he was too young before) and that prompted me to ask them to look at the whole claim again. It did result in us going from the middle to the higher care rate though.
A couple of points I can think of ...
- Have your sons care needs increased sisnce you put in your last claim?
or...
- Is there now a greater gap between your son's needs and those of an unaffected child than there was when you put the claim in?
My advice would be that if you answer yes to either of those Qs, it would be worth asking them to look at it again. Even if they decide against upping the money all you've lost is time (well and it's not very nice to fill out those forms anyway
)
When you do fill them out, it's worth frequently comparing your son to unaffected children of the same age to highlight all the extra care you need to give.
Oh, the other thing to mention is that to get the higher rate, your son should have care needs in the night aswell as the day - even if that's you checking on him every now and then to make sure he's still asleep because he'd need supervision if awake, or if it's that he has irregular sleep habits and needs supervision in the night ... etc. (probably rubbish examples!)
Good luck

Hi Millymolly the fact that your son needs sleep meds suggests that he needs care during the night. You really must ask for his case to be reassessed. My son reacted to meds so I still had to provide nighttime support for him. He is awake nearly all night so this means that I am too. Try to give as much info as you can on the claim form however trivial it may seem. It could go either way really. Has his needs changed at all as in the amount of help he needs in relation to his age. If the needs have increased your award could go up, if they have lessend they could go down. I'd seek advice from CAB etc if you intend looking into it all.0 -

Whilst that is possible,I think you should explain it in detail and try not to scare people off,if anyone is considering asking for a reassessment they should get help and advice from CAB or Welfare rights0 -

There really isn't much to explain in detail.
If you consider the political agenda behind many benefits, combined with the perceived attempt by the Labour government to 'push people off benefits' - then you can see that it is a bit of a gamble in trying to increase benefits for someone.
Sometimes it is best to 'leave sleeping dogs lying', as they say.From Poland...with love.
