Thank you very much for all your replies.
adjests - I had the temperature sensor replaced last year but that didn't work. A the time Audi did say the other problem might be that the throttle body needed replacing - and quoted me £700!! I doubt my car is worth more than a grand so forget that!!
Latest update is I've taken it to a garage this morning who I've used before and seem reputable. They also don't charge for the diagnostics. If that doesn't throw up any anything they've asked me to leave the car there overnight and they'll drive it from cold to see what happens themselves. If they can't sort it I might be back on here.
