Visa Electron put account overdrawn

She didn't! You misunderstand, she never presented the card for that amount, they took that amount, they were not actually supposed to take anything, the lady on the phone got it wrong, she was phoning to give details to setup a DD and they proccessed a card payment, granted she should not have given out her card details, but she did, they took over £1000 and she only had £500 odd in that account, hence the reason she has now gone £500 O/D
Sorry, I misunderstood you.
In that case, I would get in touch with the company that took the money, to tell them that she did not intend for them to take this payment.
It could be tricky, as she gave them the info for taking a debit card payment, and not for a DD, which would have required totally different numbers, but as she is young you can't really expect her to know all the ins and outs of it all!0 -

She is not young.
She has a letter agreeeing to the payment scheme, so hopefully this will help her get it sorted!!0 -
I went to Sainsbury with an Halifax Electron and it accepted a transaction with a few pence short in my account.
I was surprised YET with Co op it declined where I had a rogue £1 Internet transaction that affected my balance.0 -
Be careful not to mix up Visa Electron rules with the bank account facilities.
Visa Electron is an Electronic use card only, meaning it must be processed electronically and an authorisation given everytime from the aquirer. It will always be forced online to obtain this as any other method is a 'decline' state.
BUT
The customers bank is the one who 'allows' the transaction and this would depend on the account type, some accounts will have a limit to allow transactions to be processed even though the customer does not have the required cleared funds. In all it really is the customers responsibility to ensure the money is there when the amount is debited a few days later.
I had a Switch card which had this facility when I was a student with a student account. So banks can apply it to any card type they like.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
I've just checked the Ts&Cs of my co-op account and it says the bank may still allow a transaction even if there aren't enough funds available, and that this will count as an unauthorised overdraft. I understand why the rules are in place, and I know it's the cardholder's responsibility and have no wish to claim otherwise, but I think in this instance the rules are silly. 'Basic' bank accounts are designed to have no overdraft facility, and as it would be really very simple for the banks to do, I think they should place an automatic ban on transactions for which there are insufficient funds available. Not everyone knows at every second exactly how much is in their account, and it would solve a lot of problems, as well as protect the very people the accounts were designed for from high penalty charges. At the very least the self-styled 'ethical bank' should do it!0

Visa Electron was designed with the intention for not to go overdrawn; just to process the actual available funds at the time of request. Already e-marked money should be not longer available at the request time. However during the fact that they are out their different payment systems, Visa Company didn’t quite manage to find an algorithm, which validates all transactions as planned. That’s why the banks have some exceptions on T/C related going overdrawn with electron visa, because it’s technically impossible to implement it.0
