I didn't mean to start a fight.

I just get so annoyed with people needlessly using tables especially when I have to change someone else's code. Screen readers can cope with properly laid out tables however they are essentially for data display. For example, forms do not need tables, they can go in an unordered list with <label for"input name"> and <input name=""> in each <li>0 -

i've just been playing around with a lovely css page that gives me a header, a left column, main section, and a right column, and then a footer
now the left and right columns are fixed width, and the main section is the rest, depending on how big someones web browser is..
the footer then appears in the right place on each page
quite simple to do, and really really effective for a standards designed website, and works effectivley in all browsers.
took me 15 minutes maybe to do the css, and an hour to edit the existing pages to take on this new css...
simple really... but i do have a hatred of tables, as i've said, they are only good for tabluar data, or forms..0 -

Well you guy's are more savvy with th web design side of things, tell you what then, I will do the SQL Database and C# constructs if that will help.FreheitOverture wrote: »Maybe we should club together and design Martin a new site
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -

Yeah, I noticed that and had a little chuckle
Mine has just validated as XHTML Transitional although it did get 4 warnings which are because I have labels for checkboxes appearing after the checkbox instead of before....How freakin stupid is that. Theyre still next to each other, but for some reason it moans at me.
Anyone want to put the idea to Martin?0 -
OK...so which of you wants to be my mentor then?

It depends on what you want to learn. I'd be happy to impart my useless knowledge on some unsuspecting foo..... oh wait....I can help

aaah. well i carried on designing my site that i'm nearly finished with, and i got a few errors, mainly because i typed in 'onClick' for the javascript call, but XHTML doesn't like that as XHTML is all lower case... so i changed it to 'onclick' and woohoo, i'm validated again...

Going back to the OP, I would think twice before making the page 100% width. On high resolution browsers this can create very long lines of text that are hard to read and can make layouts look strange. About 1000px width is fine in most browsers (very few people use 800px screens now) and centred it looks OK in wider screens.
If you want the site to be exactly as you want it and want it to be easily viewed from mobile screens up to highest resolution monitors, you need browser sniffers to render different versions of your site (or link to different CSS files). Others will know how this is done - please don't ask me!0
