  • That's great that you got so much more - especially the size of the chicken. :j What are you going to do first?

  • I have just found an organic meat box scheme a couple of miles down the road from me, and they actually let you go and look around the farm! It is around the same prices as my local butcher too, but I much prefer organic if I can get it.

I already have an organic veg box scheme who also do lots of extra grocery items, so at this rate I will be getting everything delivered to my door! :rotfl:

I'm cooking the sausages tomorrow and serving them with celeriac gratin;)

Rachbc my butcher works out cheaper too and his stuff is also local. I think this'll probably be a one-off meat box for me.

My butcher does special freezer packs, one I get regularly consists of 2lbs mince, 2lbs diced lamb, 2lbs diced pork, 2lbs gammon steaks and 3lbs sausages for £35 -11lbs of meat as opposed to about 7lbs in the Well Thrifty box. There's also one for £22 which is 3lbs mince, 2lbs lamb mince and 2lbs braising steak. I often get the two together -gives me lots of choice.

    Organic meat?

Meat from animals that have not been fed growth promoters, chemical additives, feed that had artificial fertilizer or pesticide, genetically modified feed, regular drugs to prevent something they may catch. etc. etc.

I am so with you on that one :T

I was just looking at the price comparison. I am not a fan of the "organic badge" but I do acknowledge the producers who go for it have additional costs to cover.

My butcher supplies meat as you have described and I have no desire to "feed the organic monkey" - it was just for the price comparison. As I understand it, it costs a minimum of £3k a year just to keep the "badge", so I understand that must be reflected in the price.

    Thanks!:j

So far we've eaten the sausages and the chicken.

The sausages were delicious-sweet and sticky and very well-flavoured just how I like them.

We've just had most of the chicken for lunch. It came with giblets which I made into stock for the gravy. The chicken itself was very good, but no better than the free-range birds I usually buy. The gravy, however was particularly well-flavoured. I'm not sure whether this was because the stock was especially good, or because I don't normally have giblets from which to make gravy stock.

I'm going to use the rest of the chicken to make chicken noodle soup for tea and chicken noodle salad for the lunchboxes tomorrow. I'll use miso paste for the soup but will make stock from the carcase tomorrow to use in other meals.

Btw the chutney isn't as nice as mine -too sweet;)

I've never ordered meat this way before. If anyone else has feedback on Laverstoke organic meat I would be interested.

I placed a large order with them a couple of years ago. It never turned up and they did not respond to my emails as to why or offer a refund, so I lost £140.
So no way I would ever use them again, the farm and meat sounds lovely but their customer service was awful. Maybe millionaire Jody Sheckter put his money into the farming and research side and just didn't care about the service side.
