Fresh meat

Also i wouldn't pay £42 for a meat pack where one of the heaviest/largest things in the pack is Organic Beef Stock Bones (800g). There's a half shoulder of lamb included in the pack that also weighs 800g but a lot of bulk and weight is added to the pack by bones.
I have to say that was my reaction too. One sixth of the weight is just in beef bones. On that basis I think the Riverford ones ( and I think they are free delivery?) might be better value. I am tempted by wellhungmeat though because they do a comprehensive range of rose veal, which I can never get easily. My Waitrose only have it in the prepacked section ( not the butcher's counter) and they stock so little you have to be there early to get any. Might have to give it some thought, but at £8 delivery:eek: I'd need to make a substantial order to make it worthwhile. Hmmm they also do skirt which I love for beef casseroles, and again not easy to get it as a specific cut. I'm beginning to convince myself:rotfl: Will have to run the freezer down a bit, it's too small to get much in at the moment.
edited to add, when I say "my Waitrose" it is a 25 minute (at least!) drive away, so not exactly on the doorstep. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
I guess it's all relative... I would expect their meat to be at the top end of the market, even the thrifty stuff! But it is delicious... I've had stuff from them on special occasions as my brother lives nearby.
Hopefully the quality will mean that the quantity isn't an issue, but I'd also be interested to see what people think about it.0 -
I hope you don't mind me joining in. I entered a comp for Laverstoke Park and saw this organic meat box for £35 (rrp £55). Contains 1.5kg organic pork, 1 organic chicken, 4 lamb cutlets and 2 buffalo sirloin steaks.

Coincidentally a friend sent me the following link about the farm today which has prompted me to put the order in.

Info from the farm re delivery:we dispatch Monday to Thursday on an overnight delivery. Our standard delivery charge is £5, half of the cost to us. When placing your order in the delivery instruction option please give your preferred day.
I've never ordered meat this way before. If anyone else has feedback on Laverstoke organic meat I would be interested.0 -
I'm thinking about trying the Riverford large meat box when I've finished the Well Hung box.
These are desigend to last a fortnight -at least they change them every fortnight. There is nearly twice as much meat as the Well Hung Thrifty box and it is twice as much money £86.75. I reckon one would easily last a month for my family, thus making it the same price roughly as the Well Hung box.
The chickens are 2kg, joints 1.3-1.6kg, mince and stewing meat 800g, sausages 600g, bacon 300g. Plus you get an extra item 'a taster' and usually some cooked meat too. There are recipe suggestions in the accompanying newsletter.0 -
I am going to have a look at the riverford meat box now. I have had the veg and fruit delivered in the past. At one point weekly as it really is good value and lovely. Only stopped cos i moved (it was rivernene i used) but now thanks to that programme i am looking into this more and more. Wish i had a butchers' local!DFW since JAN 2009 - 2014 will be the year i finally clear debts
Just to see which month

I've been buying from Well Hung Meat for around 10 years now, since they very first started. I've also stayed in one of their holiday cottages and the whole "enterprise" is done on genuinely organic sustainable principles. They are lovely, lovely people - just ordinary folk, trying to make a living. For many years, they barely made a profit and whilst it looks "snazzy", I think they're only just starting to make a decent living - not millionaires by any stretch of the imagination, but making a living.
The meat is truly wonderful and Geoff Sayers personally runs everything from lambing to butchering.
It's not cheap, but you really get what you pay for. Call them and they will happily spend as long as you like answering your questions or telling you anything you want to know about the breed, rearing, slaughter or butchering.
I split my money between WHM and my local butcher, simply because I want to support them both. If I had no local butcher, I'd buy from WHM only and simply economise elsewhere.
WHM is vac-packed, labelled and ready to go straight in the freezer. However - unlike the supermarkets - the meat is HUNG FIRST and not vac-packed to marinate in its own blood
Worth a try - but I have a vested interestif people don't buy and they fail, I don't get to buy (some of) my meat from them
Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

Laverstoke is just down the road from me. I've had their meat before and it's been very good, so I hope you enjoy it!0 -
I want to order from Clares organics but they do not specify weights of meat in their meat boxes.
Does anyone have any feedback on them?0 -

Right, the Well Thrifty box has arrived:j
This is what they say will be in it from the website, I've highlighted what was actually in mine in blue;)
Whole Chicken (1kg) 1.960kg -a good 4lbs
Half Shoulder of Lamb (800g)890g -I'll probably slow-roast this until the meat falls off, and then make a ragu with it.
Beef Chuck Steak (300g)beef feather steak 555g -so-called because the marbling of fat in it gives a 'feathery' appearance. Will braise it in wine
Pork Belly Slices (300g)315g
Diced Pork (300g) 2 chicken thighs(305g)
Handmade Sausages (400g)525g (6 sausages)
Streaky Bacon (150g) 160g
Beef Steak Mince (450g)435g
Organic Beef Stock Bones (800g)390g
Organic Liver (300g)pig's liver 305g
a jar of plum and cranberry chutney
So, apart from the mince and the bones there is actually more of everything (especially the chicken, which I'm particularly pleased about). Just one substitution and a surprise jar of chutney;)
I must say 315g of pork belly doesn't look like a meal to me. They've sent a lovely looking recipe for caramelised belly slices but it won't stretch for 5 of us. However neither will 2 chicken thighs but if I cook them in the same way with the belly we'll have a good meal.
It all looks excellent and I'm going to have fun stretching the various bits and pieces into as many meals as possible.0
