Ever tried taking a full version of windows xp professional back to John Lewis - without a receipt.
I have and have been given £250 cash!!! in exchange. Not even a credit voucher!
Could be the way to get a great router plus cash!
Still I think I might just have a conscience about it.

Very surprised at that. When I worked for John Lewis, I would never have authorised anybody to give a cash refund on a product without receipt - especially not something of that value!

  • Is there actually much difference between XP Home and XP Pro anyway? I've used both and still don't know what the differences are, other than the price! I've been told that Media Centre is more hassle than it's worth because it increases start-up time significantly, but I've never used it myself.

if the router is 79.99 and xp only cost roughly £90 that makes £160 ... there still making a profit either way, just because PC world sell PC`s doesnt mean there cheap, also just because Currys sell TV`s doesnt mean there TV`s are cheap you will probably find the same TV in Pc word cheaper than currys / dixons ... how odd :-)
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

If you can return the router sometime for a refund this is a great deal - don't forget the version of XP Pro is a FULL version which is fully portable between machines, and you can upgrade them as often as you like. It isn't the OEM version which has limited upgrades allowed to the PC it is installed on.

Difficult, as they use the same DSG in house computer pricing system called Eclipse. So same SKU gives same price thoughout the group.

There isn't much difference for home users. The main thing is around domain login (so you can connect to a typical network server) and control over user login on the machine. On XP Professional, you can control who can share, read and write various files. By comparison, on XP Home, you just have the Shared Documents folder, which is rather more simplistic. Finally, remote access to your machine from somewhere else is available only on XP Pro (though add-on software can plug this gap).

A good, official comparison is here:

Bottom line is unless you need the extra features, you may as well save the cash.

Not stricly true, the same SKU will be for the same product but not necessarily the same price. Some of the LCD TVs that Currys/PC World sell are the same SKU but different prices, similarly with the Linksys Router offer at New Year, the price went up in PC World and stayed at the offer price in Currys.

all you do is ring the number given when you reinstall, and they issue you a new one that then activates the oem. They used to ask for the full number, now they only ask for the first 6 digits sometimes.

done mine countless times.Never had a prob
