Water spikes

Has anyone any experience of these. They basically connect to any plastic bottle and continuously water the roots of plants at different speeds according to requirement. They are meant to save water. Do they work ? and are they worth buying?

  • In my experience they are good because they water down to the lower levels of soil but they don't seem to regulate the flow as much as they claim

I have used them on hanging baskets to stop them drying out, they seem to work ok for that.

I've used the ones from Wilcos, I found the water ran out too quickly so put a piece of foam or a wodge of kitchen roll in the neck of the of water spike, which did the trick. Great for hanging baskets.

I have been using water spikes for about 2 years for hanging baskets and planter i ordered them from www.travena.co.uk they were arround £6.99 + p&p. At the end of the season i just wash them out and start again. They dont fit all plastic bottles, they do seem to fit all fizzy drink bottles, regulating them is trial and error but they are great for water and time saving and you can add feed at the same time.
