Researching dogs, should we get a Beagle or a Labrador or something else?

Yes and that is my point about traits and tendencies. You should try and assess the breed as a whole not one or two individuals that buck the trend.

This really is an excellent point - all animals are individuals of course but breeds have been bred very specifically and do have traits and tendencies which would be owners should be researching.

If you get a lazy beagle or a greyhound that fetches - they tend to be individuals that have bucked the trends of their breeds.

Of course you can have a dog with children....I think its brilliant to have pets around children as they are growing because it teaches them about caring for other creatures and generally helps the children be compassionate towards animals of all kinds.

I actually think it is better to get a very young dog or even puppy if you have very small dogs because the dog then is very used to small fingers from a very young age.

It can often be difficult to introduce young children into an older dogs life, when he is used to being on his own.

There are so many breeds to choose from....but what about just going along and finding a nice looking (to you) Mutt who is young?

We got a puppy beagle !!!!! yesterday and so far all is good. The kids love her and she loves them. She is eating, drinking and sleeping well. She settled last night in her training cage and slept through bar 2 little whimpers and she toilets outside if u get her signals in time or on puppy training pads inside by the back door. We haven't named her yet, we haven't a clue what to call her. She is a trypical pup biting things and sniffing everywhere but has learnt already about some items she shouldn't touch. Shes wonderful so far. If anyone has an idea for a tri coloured female beagle I would love to hear them. Once again thanks to all the advice.
  • Congratulations on your new puppy Mkbswimstar. I hope you have many, many happy years together. X

I hope you will have a long and happy life with her.

Dont know about names, there are dog name websites. But I like the old fashioned "people" names myself. Doris, Fanny, Phoebe, Annie the choice is endless really. Give it a couple of days to see what you think suits her.

We called ours Daisy (which most people thought was an unsuitable name for a dog:rolleyes: but that was 25 years ago and every other dog is called Daisy now:D . I have to say I prefer "human" names.
  • We have decided to call her Amber. She is tri coloured so one is amber colour and we wanted a name we weren't too embarrassed to say in public. We were also thinking along human or flowers and she nearly was snow drop, with the weather as it is at the mo.

Ahh that's a nice name. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with Amber. They are delightful dogs. All the best ;) .
