MORTGAGE insurance,,, can i still claim?

i have been on sickness benefit this last few years and have only realised last week that i have a mortgage protection while off sick.... i took the form to my doctor who advised me that trying to reclaim this last 12 months would raise all sorts off problems and suggested i put in the claim from now....saying i would get it for the next 12 months... he filled in his part of the form and dated the illness from this week ,but in the part which i have to fill in i have noticed that they have asked when did i have the accident or become sick ...do i put in this week or over ayear ago when i first went on sickness benefit..i have been told that the insurance company will look for any reason not to pay ...i have had the mortgage and insurance for about ten years...i would be obliged if somebody could give me some advice as to the best way to proiceed...thanks,
