If you use a web based e-mail account to post messages on a msn forum can the host trace you through the IP address? It sounds really dodgy but I can assure you it is not!

Your connection to the email server will be logged as the email pages are being downloaded to your pc - the ip address of your pc will logged in the headers of the email as the source address. ISP's have to log who is using what IP addresses and when ...
To avoid this look at a proxy service as long as you are not doing anything dodgy - otherwise please don't look... :eek:Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.0 -
So apart from e-mail address would anyone be able to tell who I am or where I live?
I am on a chat forum for a property we are buying in Cyprus and trying to rally round support for compensation whilst remaining anon.0 -
If someone could see your IP address and knew how an IP address is comprised and the IP structures of hosting companies then they could work out who your internet hosting company is and a ROUGH location of where you are from the numbers.
They couldn't find out who you are or your precise location unless they paid a dodgy company to do so.

Makes very interesting reading, I am sure they would not spend any money with a company to find out who I am but if they can narrow it down to a county as this is a global company they will know it is me. I only want to rally support for the money they owe us without putting my name to it.0

Lets get this straight.
An IP cannot be traced by another user on a forum.
But a Host can trace an IP.. the same as a message source in an email,
the only thing it will dish out though is the exchange server, forward client,
mailbot, Content Type and Time, then its upto the webmail provider to contact
your ISP and have you barred in the extreme.
But as far as another user using your info against you, forget it thats
impossible as a single user wont have access to server exchange privvy info for a backtrace all they could do is report your email if you used the address for spamming.0 -
Thank you, will start my compensation battle now!0
