can you go......

Advice pls.

My hubby lost his job in October (13 weeks ago) and on Wednesday I finished at work also.

I am returning to Uni to study nursing - for which they give me a bursary of approx £6000 a year - this does not have tax or NI contributions deducted from it.

Now I am officially a Student, can my hubby claim the Non Contribution based JSA now - which will entitle us to help with the mortgage and free school meals for our 2 children etc? We have a mortgage which only has 16 years left on it.

Where can I talk to someone about this and other benefits we could claim? I know so many people are in the same boat as us now we are in this recession, but as we both have worked since we we left school I don't think we aren't entitled to help. Its our tax £s that have bailed out the banks!

Thank you for reading this and thank you for any advice given in anticipation!

Your husband will be eligible for contributions based JSA for another 13 weeks. When that ends he can apply for means tested JSA which will be assessed on your income. Have you put in your claim for the 25% council tax discount now that you're a student?
