Travel Insurance Claim

I arranged flights from Edinburgh to Venice but had to cancel when my wife became ill.
The business was transacted via the internet and so no paperwork flowed as etickets were issued. The flights were booked with Alitalia but their partners, KLM were to be the carriers and subsequently "etickets were emailed to me.
My insurance company ( Netcoverdirect ) engaged Claims International to pursue my claim for costs incurred. Claims International are asking me to provide confirmation that a)the flights were cancelled ( I sent them copy emails ), b) that the “tickets” were unused and untransferred, and c) whether a refund had been given ( it hasn't ).
In other words they are asking me to prove various negatives.
I think the onus is on them to carry out their own investigations so I am planning to pass the matter on to the Insurance Ombudsman if my claim is not settled by the end of the month.
Anyone have any tips ?
