Lady in Black - Thanks for the explanation - I understand better now.

Emmamr - Just a thought...... after Debt free chick said she had tins in the book case if you can move your fridge out to your temporary kitchen it's amazing how much stuff you can keep in it. I still keep all my jars & bottled sauces in the fridge.

I am so glad I posted now, you have all been great and there has been some fabulous advice given which has just highlighted how little I was aware of what would actually happen when the work started. I feel a lot more prepared now.

We are definitely going to pack up most of the kitchen and all of DD's toys/clothes that she doesn't use much or fit into yet (I always buy loads of clothes the next size up for her in the sales) so they don't get all dusty.

We had already thought of moving the dining table into the living room and will probably try to keep a small part of the kitchen free for preparation etc. But we will see how it goes. The paper plates are a genius idea.

We are meeting the builders next week - no contracts sorted yet but we are definitely getting everything in wriitng - and we will ask them about the portaloo which I feel would make my life so much easier. Re tea/coffee/biscuits - I will offer to make cuppas a couple of times a day I think and leave a supply of biccies/teabags with a kettle etc in an easily accessible area for the times when I am not in and so forth.

With regards to out builders we have done a background check, definitely listed on Companies House and we have received references from people who have used them for extension work in the last year who were really happy with them. We did actually get 7 quotes in for the work which was far too many but gave us a better idea of who/what we wanted when it came to building work. Still, with big work like this it really is a leap of faith isn't it?

Thanks for all of the kind advice and words. It means a lot that people I have never met are willing to reply and share their experiences with me. I also intend to keep a bit of a diary for myself while the work is all going on so I can learn properly from the experience and I may just bore you all with the abridged version when the work is all over!

Thanks again - and sorry for the ramble.
