Cheap 'DIY' spray to stop cat scratching?

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone had a 'recipe' for a spray to stop cats clawing at furniture? I know you can buy stuff, but am a bit dubious as to how effective this is.

If anyone has a DIY method that doesn't involve shelling out for something that may not work, it would be great to hear.

Or, if you have found a spray that works and isn't overpriced, that would be good too!

Thanks

  • I got a spray at pets at home, it was about £3.50 and it does work. My cat runs away and can not stand the smell. It has a citrus smell to it.

Citrus? I wonder if the Old Style stalwart of vinegar solution with some lemon juice in it might work.

My girl cat has suddenly decided to start scratcing where she shouldn't, so I'll give this a try tonight and see if it works
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

I tried the water spray and it did not work for me :o
  • Dont spray smells that your cat will not like......hes your pet and you want him to enjoy being at home with you.....its not nice to then spray things to upset him.

Best thing to do.....either buy or make a cat scratching post and put some catnip on that.

Most cats like catnip and will be drawn to it.
  • Thanks, will give the catnip route a go. She's 13 but we have only just taken her in - not sure if we can persuade her to use a scratching post at that age. But, it's worth a shot!
  • i have used the water method (only a small amount) accompanied with 'NO'. they know that word now and no more water needed

My cat used to tear at the carpet until I bought her an expensive and sturdy stratching post (this one) She obviously felt very unstable having a really good stretch and scratch at the cheaper, thinner versions. She leaves the carpet alone now.
