Freeview not in Jersey but could I use my Sat Dish instead?

Ok, I live in Jersey (Channel Islands not NY) and where Freeview isn't available via your aerial.

At xmas we were given a tv for our bedroom (Samsung LCD) with Freeview built in but of course we can't receive the channels. However, we do have Sky and I wanted to know if we could attach an coax aerial connection to our satellite dish so that we could plug this into the back of our tv aerial socket so we could get the channels.

We live in a bungalow so wondered if it would be possible for us to do this ourselves.

Otherwise we have an old sky box (not sky plus or HD) with an expired card; would be better, and easier, to run another line from the sat dish and plug it into this box as I understand you can get the free channels on a box and expired card without a subscription.

Many thanks
Emma

A cable from your dish will not get you Freeview, however a second satellite cable from your LNB ( dish ), assuming that it has a spare connection, will work fine with your old Sky Receiver, and yes your old card should be OK, as long as it is the yellow house on dark blue type.

It will take a while for the card to re-activate, but it will happen automatically.
  • You cannot get Freeview (via an arial) but can get Freesat (through your Sky dish) without any monthly fees.

Why would the OP want to buy a Freesat Receiver when she has a spare Sky Receiver and card? .. with no fees.

Far more channels on a Sky Receiver.

That's what I'm referring to: freeSAT (not freeVIEW):p

I think that you will find that using an old Sky box will receive the "Free to Air" channels and not FreeSat.

Although they both come via a dish they are technically not the same product, although a lot of people think they are.

    Sky Free to Air
    Freeview
    FreeSat

All FREE (no monthly fees) but slightly different.

But, to answer the original question, YES an old Sky box connected to the dish will work.
  • Just installed free to air in three rooms in my house... cost £50 by a local handler

I think you need to do a bit more study before posting advice, Freesat is nothing to do with Sky.. :p
  • Well THIS is what I have. But don't listen to me, I know nothing!
