Housing Benefit

can anyone help me...? I am alone with my three children. My ex-partner still lives in our family home and I am renting. I work part-time and claim tax credits as well as getting maintenance payements for the kids. After the recent changes I have applied for housing benefit - but am being told that because I have an interest in the property my ex is in - I am not entitled....is this true...or fair. I have not access to the house - locks have been changed!

  • If your family home is up for sale or is subject to divorce proceedings it can be disregarded. Even if it is not, if your share is worth less than £16k (after outstanding mortgage were paid and 10% deducted for selling costs), you could still be eligible for hb.
