Extended payments C/tax rent??

Hi

My hubbies going back to work fulltime after being a fulltime carer for our son.I am going to be the fulltime carer for him instead.

My question is,as he's going onto monthly wages and has to work 4 weeks in hand,we could not have any wages for 6-7 weeks once he starts.Just wondered after reading on the internet,is he entitled to any help for payments of our rent/council tax etc for the first month before he starts to get a wage as we will be losing income support. We will still get carers as this will be changed over to me and child benefit, just wondered if there was any help we could get for the first few weeks.

Before i phone them,i wanted to have a little knowledge first to know what to ask for.

Its a good question, i know when i worked, i got extended payments for housing benefit and council tax benefit, for 4 further weeks to help tide me over, but that was because i had been recieving income support, not sure how it works if you recieve carers allowance, i would ask the citizens advice bureaux they should be able to help you , you may still be able to get the extra 4 weeks paid anyway as your is has now stopped.

Well,as soon as he starts work,we will lose all income support meaning we will have nothing to live on until his first wage. Not sure whether we'll get wtc though,i have to speak to them too.
I've just come off the phone from carers and they told me i have to apply in my own right for carers after my hubbie tells them he is going fulltime employment. This means that i won't get carers for 4-6 weeks until they deal with my application.
Just concerned that as soon as he starts work,we will be in arrears of c/tax and rent for atleast 4 weeks until he receives a wage.I thought we may be entitled to extended payments as we are in receipt of income support until he starts work.

Yes i can see your predicament here, you should be able to claim wtc i would think , and ctc, your income has to be pretty high for you not to be able to claim something, but def check about extended payments, i know i would, the help is there for families, the benefit system is such a complicated system these days i think, and its up to the individual to find out what they are actually entitled too so def get in touch with dwp and cab.

We have been in receipt of income support for 6 years and he's been a fulltime carer for our son for the same amount of time receiving carers allowance.
  • I work for housing benefits and if you have been in receipt of income support for at least 26 weeks prior to your husband starting work, and his job is expected to last at least 5 weeks and is over 16 hours a week, you are entitled to 4 weeks extended payments of housing and council tax benefit at the rate you were previously receiving. You will also be entitled to working tax credits.

    Good luck
